Radiators Not Heating
Cold radiators in a house that's otherwise heating usually point at one loop rather than the boiler, so call and mention which rooms have gone cold.
When this becomes an emergency
- One zone stays stone cold while the rest of the house comes up to temperature.
- A radiator is hot along the bottom and cold across the top.
- Something gurgles inside the loop every time the circulator starts.
- The upstairs rooms never warm up while the main floor overheats.
What a pro does
A cold radiator with a working boiler behind it is a distribution problem, and distribution problems are mostly about air and flow. Air rises to the high points of a hot-water system and parks there, which is why the top of a radiator goes cold first and why the upstairs of a story-and-a-half loses out before anything else. A tech purges the loop properly and then looks at why the air got in. Circulators fail quietly too. A pump that spins without moving water, a zone valve stuck partway, or a flow check hung open all produce a cold zone with a perfectly healthy boiler sitting there making heat nobody's receiving. In a place that runs on setback half the year, a seized zone valve found in November usually hasn't moved since the last thaw.
