Thermostat Not Working
A thermostat that has quit can leave a perfectly good furnace sitting idle in cold weather, so call and let someone sort out which side has actually failed.
When this becomes an emergency
- The screen is dark, or it lights up and then drops out again.
- The room feels far colder than the number showing on the display.
- Nothing happens at the furnace no matter where the setpoint goes.
- A programmable unit keeps losing its schedule and reverting to defaults.
What a pro does
A dead display is batteries more often than anything else, and that's the first thing to rule out. Past that, the interesting part is the low-voltage circuit between the wall and the equipment: two or three small wires stapled through joists decades ago, sometimes spliced in a crawlspace, occasionally chewed by a mouse that came in for the winter. A tech jumps the terminals at the furnace to see whether the equipment responds. If it fires with the thermostat out of the picture, the fault is upstream in the wiring or the stat itself, and if nothing happens the problem was never the thermostat at all. Placement causes its own share of complaints. A stat on an outside wall, in a draft from a door that gets opened all day, or across the room from a woodstove will read a temperature the rest of the house does not share.
