What a pro does

A dead display is batteries more often than anything else, and that's the first thing to rule out. Past that, the interesting part is the low-voltage circuit between the wall and the equipment: two or three small wires stapled through joists decades ago, sometimes spliced in a crawlspace, occasionally chewed by a mouse that came in for the winter. A tech jumps the terminals at the furnace to see whether the equipment responds. If it fires with the thermostat out of the picture, the fault is upstream in the wiring or the stat itself, and if nothing happens the problem was never the thermostat at all. Placement causes its own share of complaints. A stat on an outside wall, in a draft from a door that gets opened all day, or across the room from a woodstove will read a temperature the rest of the house does not share.

Will a smart thermostat work on an older furnace?

Usually, though many need a common wire for steady power. Without one they run off the battery, brown out, and drop the connection in ways that look like the furnace is failing.

Can mice really cause a thermostat problem?

They can and they do. Thermostat wire is thin and easy to chew, and a partially damaged conductor causes intermittent faults that come and go with temperature and vibration.

Why does the reading not match how the room feels?

Where the stat sits governs what it measures. Sun on the wall, a draft, or heat drifting over from a stove will all skew the reading well away from what the living space is actually doing.

Should the thermostat simply be replaced?

Only after the wiring and the equipment check out. Swapping the stat first is a common and expensive way to discover the fault was somewhere behind the wall.
